The Forgotten Treasures Among Us

Two weeks at La Residencia de Mayores de la Fundación San Antonio de Benagéber were a truly eye-opening and spiritual experience for me. During this time, I came to see God in a new way. I realised that He speaks to me through simple faces, and that each person I met carried a story, a lesson, and a wisdom that could only come from a long life full of experiences.

While at the centre, I had the opportunity to take the residents to church, participate in the celebration of the Word of God, go on small outings, help feed those who could not eat on their own, and engage in conversations in which they shared memories about their families, struggles, and joys. I also noticed their deep longing for visits from family members. The happiness and light in their eyes when they saw their loved ones were deeply moving, and these moments reminded me of the human need for connection and the joy that simple presence can bring. I was touched by their pride when speaking about their children, but I was equally moved by the sadness of those who were alone, without family.

Moreover, I was confronted with the reality of those who had lost their memory or mental clarity. At first, it was difficult to see them confused or unable to recognize others, even their own family members. Yet despite this, their lives still radiated God’s presence, reminding me that love and compassion go beyond words and recognition.

What impressed me most, however, was the care they showed for one another. Even though many were sick or physically weak, they continued to contribute generously to the community. For example, the stronger individuals helped those who were weaker, demonstrating compassion and generosity. Their support for one another showed me that age and illness do not diminish the ability to love. As Pope Francis reminds us, the elderly are the “firm foundation” of the future. Through this experience, I came to understand that their presence offers young people guidance, wisdom, and a sense of continuity.

Indeed, my time at the elderly care centre was enriching in every sense. It helped me cultivate patience, care, and respect for the elderly, while also strengthening my understanding of the value of family and community. For all of these reasons, I am deeply grateful to the Juniorate of Aldaia community for giving me the opportunity to share our presence with others and to discover God’s love in serving the most vulnerable.
