A Living Witness to Hope

In studying and contemplating the life of the Founder, Friar Ramón Zubieta, I was deeply moved and inspired by his total dedication to God and to the poorest of the poor. His story is not simply a chapter of history, but a living testimony of faith, courage, and hope that continues to illuminate our missionary path in today’s complex world.

This year, as we commemorate the 104th anniversary of his death, we are invited not only to remember his extraordinary life, but also to rekindle the flame of his missionary spirit in our own hearts. His legacy reminds us that holiness is born of daily faithfulness, of listening to the voice of God and responding with generous love.

Reflecting on his life, I realized that his example speaks powerfully to our time, an era marked by wars, natural disasters, injustice, violence, corruption, and so on. In the midst of such realities, his witness becomes a prophetic challenge and a source of encouragement, reminding us that mission remains possible and necessary, even in the most difficult circumstances. His path was one of profound faith and unwavering trust in Divine Providence, characterized by obedience, sacrifice, and a deep sense of mission. His years in the Philippines and later his mission in the Peruvian Amazon reveal a tireless and courageous spirit, capable of transforming adversity into opportunity, solitude into encounter, and fear into bravery.

Today, as we celebrate the Year of Hope, the life of Friar Ramón Zubieta resonates with renewed meaning. His memory strengthens our conviction that hope is not merely a feeling, but a firm trust in God’s promises. He invites us to be bearers of hope, to face challenges with courage, to cross borders with compassion, and to believe that God continues to work even in the shadows of our time. His humble journeys along the Amazon River in a simple canoe remind us that hope is born of perseverance and faith, of trusting that God’s light can break through all darkness.

For him, the mission was never a task to be accomplished, but a way of life, a daily commitment fueled by his encounter with the crucified and risen Christ, especially in the faces of the poor and marginalized. In a world often tempted by despair, his life stands as a beacon of hope, calling us to believe that transformation begins when we respond with faith, love, and perseverance.

In honoring the memory of Friar Ramón Zubieta, we give thanks for his life and his legacy, a life given out of love for God and humanity. May his passion for the Gospel continue to inspire us to be courageous witnesses of hope, prophets of compassion, and builders of a world where love knows no borders.

“My spirit is always with you; but there are times when I ask Our Lord that you feel as if I were present to encourage and strengthen you…”

(Bishop Ramón Zubieta)
