I received my assignment to Quelimane this year with a hopeful outlook and an eager heart, ready to set foot on this land where so many of the sisters gave their lives, becoming bread for these people. It is a corner of the country worth knowing and experiencing, especially as a missionary. Quelimane is known as the city of bicycles, but for me, it is the smile of Mozambique. In this place, the people know only how to be joyful in simplicity and gentle in humility. It is a small community, and everyone knows each other; it feels wonderful to be here! I have received and learned more than I deserved because these people are teaching us with their lives. I particularly feel a sense of belonging; the people don’t just give, but how they give! Accompanying the Christian communities closely, seeing how they live, grow, and share their daily experiences of faith, their hopeful way of being, even when there seems to be no reason for it, is truly a grace. Ultimately, the greatest grace I have received is seeing, witnessing, and learning to “have hope” in all dimensions of life with this community. Naturally, the “…among the people, come and see!” Today, I not only see, but my heart also feels the firm steps of hope in rhythm with this small community in every sense.
