I chose to write about Berta Cáceres (Honduras) because her life and witness speak to me deeply as a young missionary and consecrated woman. In her, I find an example of courageous faith, commitment to justice, and concrete love for creation. Her story inspires me to understand that following Christ also involves defending life, the people, and the land that God has entrusted to us.
Berta dedicated her life to defending the land, Indigenous peoples, and creation, understood as a sacred gift from God that must be protected and respected. Her struggle was not only social or ecological, but profoundly spiritual: she sought for justice and peace to flourish in harmony with all forms of life.
As a young missionary, I feel deeply challenged by her witness. Berta teaches me that true faith cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of the world. She inspires me to raise my voice for those who are not heard—the poor, the marginalized, those who suffer violence or are deprived of their rights—and to do so with the love and hope that spring from the Gospel.
Her courage reminds me that following Christ means walking alongside those who weep, protecting life in all its forms, and working for a more just world. In her, I discover the face of the merciful God who acts through those who dare to love without measure. Her life impels me to live a committed faith, to be a voice for the voiceless, and to unite prayer with transformative action, thus building small signs of the Kingdom of God wherever it is most needed.
