A MISSION THAT TRANSFORMS: THE FACE OF CHRIST ON THE PERIPHERY

This reflection stems from the mission experience in the communities of Salamá, where simplicity and precariousness are intertwined with a profound faith. There, we experienced mission as an encounter that impels us to go out, listen, and learn. I wish to share what the Lord has done to encourage us to continue walking with openness and hope.

Mission is not just service; it is an encounter that changes lives. In vulnerable communities, I discovered that the true face of Christ is revealed in humility, in poverty, and in the hope that springs up in the midst of difficulty. There, where hospitals, schools, and resources are lacking, I found hearts capable of supporting one another and joyfully welcoming our presence. Each visit was a lesson. Faith does not grow in isolation, but in the movement of going out, walking, and sharing. Amidst simple houses and long roads, I experienced the power of the Spirit that transforms fear into trust and fragility into openness. I discovered that we are not alone: God walks with us, empowers us, and sustains us in what seems impossible.

The mission taught me to look with compassion, to listen with patience, and to serve with love. At other times, especially when speaking in public or leading celebrations, I felt how the Spirit transformed my insecurity into confidence. It was then that I understood that the mission is greater than my limitations; it is God who acts and sends us, and our response is humble availability. This experience reaffirmed my congregational identity: to be a presence that consoles and a sign of hope. As Dominican Missionaries of the Rosary, we are called to journey toward those who need us most, sowing light to reveal the face of Christ and strengthening our vocation to love, serve, and build community.

Today I can say that the mission transforms because it takes us beyond our limitations and opens our eyes to what is essential. Christ allows himself to be found in the small and fragile, and his love invites us to respond with generosity and joy. May this experience encourage us to continue walking together: trusting, listening, and serving, so that signs of the Kingdom of peace, justice, love, and hope may flourish in every periphery.

With love and gratitude
