Sometimes, without realizing it, the pilgrim heart seeks a place to rest, a space where the broken pieces can fit together without judgment; where the words we don’t know how to say are understood nonetheless, where silence becomes listening. We don’t always know what we are looking for, but the soul recognizes the promised land when the Lord leads it there. There, the heart learns to dwell in peace and to trust again.
A year ago, I arrived in Peru and was sent to the community called Our Lady of Bethlehem, located in the district of San Clemente, in the province of Pisco. Upon receiving this news, I was filled with joy, like Mary when she set out on her journey (cf. Lk 1:39), and also with fear in the face of the unknown. The language, the culture, and the novelty of the journey awakened my insecurities. However, I held within me the certainty that God went before me (cf. Dt 31:8). And so it was: without realizing it, He surrounded me with sincere faces, with silences that speak louder than words, and with gestures born of true love. There was nothing to prove, no need to rush, no need to be anyone other than who we already were. This community is not just a house, but a place where God embraced my humanity anew. The first steps were not easy. Language was a barrier, and I felt that my words couldn’t express all that I carried within. But the Lord showed me that love has its own language. There, He gave me a family, not founded on blood, but on the fraternal communion that springs from the spirit.
Today, remembering those days, my heart is filled with gratitude. This experience was a reminder that it is possible to live God’s plan, which is fraternity in the simplicity of everyday life, confidently sharing joys and difficulties. When people truly open themselves up, the soul can find its place, even in the unexpected. Thanks to that, today I feel stronger, more fulfilled, and above all, deeply grateful. My heart smiles every time I think of them, because I know I have experienced something that isn’t found in every corner of the world: love and acceptance.
